Days for Girls Reusable Pads

DECEMBER 2023 NEWS

This December was about celebrating and being with our families.
Sharing love and laughter, may we kindly carry it through to the next year and help keep our young girls in school by donating anything basic to encourage them and continue helping them enjoy their journey through school.

Donate school shoes, socks, toiletries, stationery, and uniforms.

Adopt a child and look after them in the best way you can. The best you can do is make sure that a child has a school uniform and attends school by checking on them occasionally.

COLLABORATION BETWEEN DAYS FOR GIRLS AND MOTLALETSI CHARITY CLUB

NOVEMBER 2023 HANDOVER REPORT

The great news is finally here, our communities are finally opening to the use of reusable sanitary pads, and they buy in is amazing. The MCC team has worked tirelessly to workshop and teach the local parents and their teenage girls about the use of sanitary pads and the importance of feminine hygiene.

In the past months Agrieneth Masule from Motlaletsi charity club contacted Delyth from the Days for Girls and a bag of 50 reusable sanitary pads were donated. It was a fun and challenging exercise to get the bag of goods, as it was left in Maun and the club was based in Mochudi, almost a 1000 km distance apart.

The bag finally arrived in Mochudi after 7 weeks of waiting and all worked out for the better for our girls in question.
Negotiations with the school management took longer than expected but finally all fell into place and suitable dates were agreed upon.

This report is to say a big thank you to Days for Girls UK for their love and support and we hope you know that your contribution has changed many lives of our girls. Through our workshops it has been reported that more girls are now attending school and their classes ever since the project started in 2013, and there is a reduced number of defilement cases, and abuse towards the young girls.

With this we thank you and hope for a continued relationship to help our girls in rural communities and we hope our girls can use these opportunities to maximise on their learning journey.

Above are pictures from the handover.
The school has 478 girls and from that number the club only supports 220girls who are from disadvantaged backgrounds.
We were able to choose only 50 for this particular project looking at their needs and challenges at home.
The donation / handover was a success, and the hope is to be able to donate for the 170 girls remaining in future projects.

The club works with 2000 girls in 10 different schools, and we support with what we have at the time.

WHEN AND WHY THE PROJECT WAS STARTED

The sanitary pads project started in 2013 and it was motivated by the fact that many girls were dropping out of school mainly because they became mothers at a young age (teenage mothers) and it was because of the poverty they were in thus older men with money and power take advantage of their situation in exchange for basic toiletries.

HOW IT BENEFITS THE GIRLS

This project benefits many girls in schools as now we teach them about feminine hygiene, donate sanitary pads, teach them how to use them dispose of them and mainly reduce the chances of the girls getting into sexual relationships with older men seeking support to buy basic sanitary pads. Our girls find themselves in abusive relationships due to the dependence they have on the men who support them.

The goal is to teach our girls how to be independent, concentrate on attending their classes so they may complete their basic education and use that to change their lives for the better. Education is available but if one does not have support or anyone encouraging them, they may easily drop out or lose interest.

WHAT ARE THE FUTURE PLANS

Motlaletsi charity club understands that not all learners academically gifted or that will excel at school, so we work hard to try encouraging them to at least complete the basic education freely provided.

Our goal is to teach our girls to be entrepreneurs, teach them basic sewing skills which may help them make a little money for their families and be able to make pads and clothes for themselves.

With many young, single parent women, children are born into poverty and broken homes, thus we try work with the local social services to reduce the burden on the mothers.

We pride ourselves in using every opportunity we get to gather and teach young girls about feminine hygiene.

Recently, we had an opportunity to donate some REUSABLE SANITARY PADS for our girls.

It is a new route we are taking and we are loving the developments.

With each opportunity, I get to have a one on one with the young girls we help,

I get to find out they need support because they lack a lot of information about their bodies and they don’t have the platform to have a chilled conversation with their parents .

So my role comes in as a big sister and I am able to chat and laugh with them about all things menstruation.

Menstruation is not a taboo subject, so we need to openly talk to our girls about it and they should understand how to handle themselves when feeling lost.

Due to financial constraints and love & care for our environment, we have embarked on a journey to collaborate with ‘DAYS FOR GIRLS ‘ to provide reusable sanitary pads for young girls in our society.

It is part of our continued fight against period poverty. Our aim is to make sure that each and every young girl has an appropriate pad to use during their menstruation and that they are able to attend their lessons, and never miss a single day of their learning. Our young girls across the world are the future and nothing should hinder their development in education.

Menstruation is not talked about on a daily basis, but it affects each and every girl/ woman from the first day of her periods till the day they reach menopause. Therefore they deserve to have every opportunity before them whether on their period or not.

Menstruation 🩸 should not be the reason you skip a lesson or a day at work.

We know that the provision of pads for each and every girl in schools will definitely boost their confidence and help them achieve their goals.

Switching from traditional sanitary products to reusable pads has proven to be sustainable and will reduce many costs to many families.

And this will reduce the problem of disposal, as in most rural areas the city councils do not collect rubbish on time and the disposed rubbish becomes snacks for the domestic animals - which is not good for the ecosystem in any way.
